1ST AIR CAVALRY—VIETNAM 1965 to 1972

Air Cavalry At The Wall

        They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the
sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lawrence Binyon

The Brotherhood of the Horse Combat Operations

Welcome to the 1st Air Cavalry History Project. The mission of the project is to record, document and preserve the unique history and service of the Air Cav Troopers who served as members of the Division from 1965 thru 1972. The troopers of the 1st Cav Division were the pioneers of the U.S. Army's doctrine of combat airmobility. The Division evolved from the 11th Air Assault Division (Test) at Ft. Benning Georgia, where during their brief existence, developed the concept and tactics of helicopter warfare. On July 1, 1965 the 11th Air Assault (test) became the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile).

Are you a 1st Cav veteran with a story to tell or a memory to share? If so please post your recollections to the appropriate operation and month. We want your stories of a time; when boys became men and Air Cav Troopers wore jungle boots. If you have stories, photographs, documents and after action reports please email Garry Bowles at gbowl9@aol.com.
